What to Do if Your Rental Car Breaks Down in Iceland
Imagine this: you’ve just picked up your rental car in Iceland, ready to explore glaciers, hot springs, and waterfalls. Suddenly, the car develops a problem — maybe it won’t start, or a warning light flashes. What now?
Many visitors aren’t aware that Iceland has specific legislation for rental cars: Act No. 65/2015 on the rental of registered vehicles. At first glance, the law seems vague, but Regulation No. 840/2015 makes things clearer. According to Article 8, car rental companies must always operate in line with good business practices. This includes making sure vehicles are well-maintained, safe, and suitable for the season (for example, with proper tires for winter roads).
Most importantly for you as a renter: if the car breaks down or something prevents you from continuing your trip, the rental company is obligated to assist you. It’s their responsibility to ensure the car is in good condition and to provide help when problems arise.
So, if you ever find yourself stranded with a rental car in Iceland, remember — the law is on your side. And if you need guidance or direct legal support, don’t hesitate to contact us by phone, WhatsApp, or email.
